turkey coup attempt2016

All flights from Istanbul's Ataturk Airport have been canceled, after Turkish military said it had taken control of the government.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim warns that it is wrong to refer to the events as a coup. A group within Turkey's military has attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary", Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan invited all public to stand against this military group. Erdogan said that those behind the attempted coup would pay the highest price.

The state-run Anadolu news agency said the chief of Turkey's military staff was among people taken "hostage" in the capital Ankara. CNN Turk also reported that hostages were being held at the military headquarters.

Defense Minister Fikri Isik confirmed to Haber Turk TV Channel that this is a fake coup.

The press secretary of Turkish intel agency MİT Nuh Yılmaz said the situation was “back to normal”.

The state-run broadcaster, TRT, which was taken over by the coup plotters, was retaken by the security forces.

The plotters, who named themselves the “Peace in the Country Council,” had forced a TRT speaker to read a declaration, claiming to take the power in the country.

A large crowd gathered at Istanbul Atatürk International Airport, where President Erdoğan was expected to deliver a speech.
