Police in Brussels evacuated the train station on Sunday after two suspect suitcases were found. The Gare Centrale and the adjacent Carrefour de l'Europe square were cleared at midday as police moved in to inspect the abandoned luggages.

Bomb disposal experts were rushed to the station to inspect the suitcases that were found near lockers that can be rented out by rail passengers.

All train traffic through the station was halted, and Belgian train operator SNCB warned of potential major disruption on the rail network, which is also used by Eurostar trains travelling to and from London.
